During a visit by board members and donors to the Save Kids Trust programs in Jaipur, India, Dr. Sharwan Saini took us to visit one of his first students. She was educated in a program run by SKT 20 years ago when she was a child.
Today, she lives with her husband, five children, and their grandparents, by the side of a road in Jaipur. You can see the road in several of the photographs.
When we arrived, Dr. Sharwan led the way, and she met him with a hug and a huge smile! She was happy to greet us and proudly introduced us to her family. Her smile told us of her happy memories of Dr. Sharwan and SKT.
We gave them all mittens before we left and Dr. Shawan surprised us when he asked her to read the notes tucked inside. Her reading ability was perfect ~ with no hesitation she read Hindi with inflection and ease.
We left the visit with a better understanding of the love and comfort that ‘home’ represents. They are happy and loved. Educated, too, as she is teaching her son to read. She was excited to show us the notebook they use. Their life by the side of the road is challenging, but these three generations of family are content with what they have. And they were all delighted by the unique and colorful gift of mittens!
The visit also showed us the lasting impact that Save Kids Trust can have on an individual and beyond to the family, even if the person does not use their additional knowledge to change their life circumstances.
