Recently, Dr. Sharwan got to revisit a Save Kids Trust project in Israel Camp, an informal housing settlement near Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. This project started with a medical table for a weekend and grew into an afternoon school program. The goal of this school is to prepare children for the local government elementary program. This is needed because children living in informal settlements are not normally trained in how to behave in order to succeed in traditional school. Waiting your turn, raising your hand to ask a question, standing in an orderly line - these are examples of what is needed in school but not a part of growing up in these communities. Save Kids Trust stepped in to help children learn these skills while having fun, safe, social activities (including basic reading and writing skills for older students). Dr. Sharwan noted on his return visit that the school had 46 new children enrolled in first through fifth grade. He said the fast birth rate and new families joining the community every day made the goal of ‘reach every child’ very difficult. He commented that many children are still not going to any school. Instead, their job is sitting near the temple waiting for food handouts for the family. This is a tough cycle of poverty to break. Save Kids Trust has helped many children and there are many more that need to be reached. Your donation can help us reach the most vulnerable in the informal housing settlements- the children.
