Bimala has had much to worry about but lately she is hopeful again.
Two years ago her husband, an auto-rickshaw driver, was killed in a traffic accident. Bimala, 40 years old, was left to care and provide for her two teenage daughters. She began working as a domestic helper and was just able to earn the bare minimum for her family but then Covid-19 hit and her domestic work completely stopped. Now she had lost her husband and her ability to earn an income. She worried a lot thinking about her daughters’ future. She somehow managed during the pandemic with the help of relatives and neighbors but her worry about the future was genuine. The staff at Save Kids Trust (SKT) learned of her plight and, in talking with Bimala, learned that she had training in basic stitching skills but had given up that work long ago. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, SKT decided to help Bimala by giving her a sewing machine. Now Bimala is earning income by stitching clothes for her neighbors and others in the slum. Bimala’s life has completely turned around. She is feeling happy and secure and wants her daughters to study further so that they also have hope for the future. SKT sees stories like Bimala’s every day as they serve the poor of Jaipur through the three SKT medical clinics placed around the city and in the temporary street clinics that SKT runs. During the Covid pandemic, Dr. Saini, our Executive Director, and the SKT team gained new awareness about how many widowed and abandoned women there are in the slums of Jaipur. Save Kids Trust has dedicated 2021 to providing an increased focus on women’s issues. As Dr. Saini says, “Most people don’t need help forever, they just need a helping hand through their toughest times and then they will take care of themselves.” Sometimes the need is an emergency medical situation and sometimes the need, like with Bimala, is as simple as a sewing machine so she could make the most of skills she already knew. SKT builds relationships with communities through its medical clinics so they are positioned to provide a helping hand, no matter what is needed. Donate today and make a difference – no matter what is needed!
