Nisha came to the clinic with concerns of extreme fatigue that she couldn’t heal. She is 16 years old, studying in 11th class, and lives in a slum nearby. On examination, her hands looked pale and had a yellowish hue. A simple $2 blood test* shows her HB level was very low, 6.7, which is severe anemia. (Normal range for HB level for a female is 12.0-15.5 grams per deciliter.)
Our SKT clinic provided proper education for Nisha on anemia and treatment. There are many girls like her in the slums. It is very difficult for these families to get all the food needed for a proper diet. With a culture that still allows early marriages, which lead to early and multiple pregnancies, this creates a problem. (See our story on Generational Malnutrition.) Save Kids Trust makes the effort to educate the adolescent girls about getting enough iron from basic diets during our menstruation training. Indeed, it was our education that prompted Nisha to seek help! Educating and creating a generation of healthy young women, who birth healthy children, and are raised by mothers who know about healthy eating, can help break the cycle of poverty and sickness. *SKT clinics do not have the facilities to run labs and tests themselves. Through medical networking, we have several labs who will run tests for our clients at cost or as a donation. This is one way the local community supports our work.
