Amit and Kaia

​It is the dream of every parent to give their children everything they need for a healthy and bright future. Mr. Amit, a resident of Gurjar Ki Thadi, Jaipur, is no different than any other parent. 

Mr. Amit is a committed husband and father to two young sons. As a daily wage earner, he was providing his family with everything they needed. Amit even had a deed to the family’s land, a rare occurrence in an informal housing settlement community. Amit has two sons: the elder one is ten years old and the younger one is six years old. 

​Everything changed for the family in 2009 when it became a struggle for Mr. Amit to find employment. Amit lost almost all his income, and basic supplies dwindled.  To meet the needs of his family, Amit started traveling to other cities in India in search of a good job. 

Around the same time, Amit’s wife, Kaia, started complaining of heart pain. She was later diagnosed with a heart disease. The local doctor advised Kaia to get an operation for this disease, but it was estimated to cost around 2,000 USD. Kaia’s diagnosis and the doctor’s orders came as a real shock to the family, who was already struggling financially. To pay for the operation, Amit and his family decided to sell the family’s land and expensive belongings like jewelry. 

Fortunately, the operation was successful, but they were left penniless and landless.

After roaming around the different cities looking for job, Amit started repairing shoes at a place near their community. As a cobbler, he could earn 3 to 5 USD per day. Most of his income went to medicine, leaving his children without the possibility of a good education.

​After visiting a Jeevan Vriksh Clinic, Amit’s family has a clear path to move into the future. With Kaia’s medication provided by the clinic, the family can afford can send the children to school.
