Save Kids has several school programs in New Delhi inside slum areas. Sharwan works with the local slum landlord to secure an area to hold school. The goal is to teach younger students the skills needed to succeed in the local government school. Skills like waiting patiently for a snack, raising your hand, how to stand in a line, etc., are taught in the midst of fun, safe, purposeful activities. With older students, help with their school work is also available. Sharwan is also able to identify and quietly assist children who may need some medical intervention (perhaps a lingering cough or noticeable breathing or fever problems). Teaching activities also include ways to stay physically safe and treats shared are personal hygiene items or seasonal clothing. It is through his relationship with children that he often gets to help parents or extended family (see the story on Zara). Below are photos from several different 2017 school activities. The gatherings were in different locations as you will notice by looking at the backgrounds. You will see some teachers in the photos as well as mothers who came to listen to the instruction. If you look closely you can enjoy a glimpse of life in the slums complete with smiles, hard work, and real life circumstances.
